Excalibur (Orion, 1981), Alternate Comp Key Art by Bob Peak. Tasked with synthesizing the themes of fantasy, power, desire, and destiny into a series of poster and advertising materials for 1981’s epic dark medieval fantasy Excalibur, design maestro Bob Peak employed the trademark flourishes and emotions that had come to define his work. The alternate comp art offered here strikes the balance of each of these themes, showing the armor-clad Lancelot in a sensual embrace with Guinevere beneath a big, blood-orange sun. The whisps streaking from each of them renders the couple as if floating in space, heightening both the passion and fantasy elements of the film. In Peak’s signature fashion, the colors used here are otherworldly, a royal mixture of orange, purple, yellow, black, and red that blend into and out of each other with ease. Accomplished with airbrush, gouache, and pastel on 32″ x 40″ artist’s board and signed by Peak on the lower righthand corner.
