The Voyage

The Voyage (Interfilm, 1974), Final Key Poster Art by Bob Peak. Star-crossed lovers and incurable illness collide in pre-war Sicily in the final film directed by Vittorio de Sica, starring Richard Burton and Sophia Loren. Placed squarely in the middle of Peak’s career during a transitional period for his style, consisting of elements that characterize his earlier work while experimenting with the flairs and flourishes that would define his most memorable work, this final key art for The Voyage puts Adriana de Mauro (Sophia Loren) front and center with the men who love her, Cesare Braggi (Richard Burton) and his brother Antonio (Ian Bannen) behind her in the background. The colors and style used to depict the background scene, featuring the gondolas of Venice and soldiers of the Italian army, evoke the paintings of Gustav Klimt, notably in color scheme. Accomplished with pastel, gouache, watercolor, and mixed media paste-up elements on 30″ x 40″ artist’s board. Signed by Peak on the central image with handwritten production info, “1507 THE VOYAGE 1SH 30×40” on the lower righthand corner. Exhibits signs of handling, wear, and age, including soiling, smudges, chipped and bumped corners, pinholes, adhesive residue from prior framing and other blemishes mostly to perimeters.
